Can we pass Single Payer in Albany?
Roundtable discussion on the New York Health Campaign

In the last two years, the campaign to create a single-payer health care system in New York State has made tremendous progress. Assm. Gottfried’s New York Health bill now has 74 cosponsors in the Assembly (76 needed to pass), and the number of endorsing unions, professional and community groups has gone from 37 to almost 80 in the last three months. The 45-member New York State Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Legislative Caucus endorsed the bill the day after our Lobby Day, attended by 250 participants. How did we get here, and what obstacles do we face moving forward? What lessons can we learn from the 1992 campaign, the last time the bill was able to pass the Assembly? Come join the conversation.

Healthcare is a Human Right!

We need to get as many calls to members of the New York State Assembly as possible on Tuesday, April 29th in support of bringing the New York Health bill to a vote before the session ends in June.

With enough pressure, we can pass this bill in the Assembly, which will send a big message: New Yorkers want truly equitable, universal health care without private health insurance companies!

Assemblyman Richard Gottfried authored a letter to Speaker Silver, asking him to bring the bill to the floor for a vote. You can help by calling your Assembly person and urging them to sign on to Assemblyman Gottfried’s letter to Speaker Silver.

Every call counts! It makes a big difference to hear directly from their constituents.

Just follow these simple steps to make a big impact on health care justice:

1) Look up your NYS Assembly person at www.votesmart.org.

2) Contact the NYS Assembly Capitol Switchboard at (518) 455-4100 and ask for your Assembly Representative’s office.

3) Sample Scripts:

Hi, I’m a constituent of Assembly person ________. Today, I’m calling to request he/she join Assemblyman Gottfried in the “Dear Colleague” letter to Speaker Silver asking for the New York Health bill (5389A) to come to a vote this session.

Human Rights Day: Celebrating the Growing Healthcare is a Human Right Movement: An Evening in Honor of Vermont Human Rights Leader Peg Franzen

Please join us on Human Rights Day, December 10th, to honor the late Peg Franzen, member of the Vermont Workers’ Center and a key leader in Vermont’’s pioneering Healthcare Is a Human Right Campaign.

Ms. Franzen is the former President of the Vermont Workers’ Center and long-time disability rights activist, exemplifies the power of people to effectuate change in their communities and in their state. The Healthcare Is a Human Right Campaign began in Vermont where, in the midst of intense debate about the Affordable Care Act, it succeeded in passing the country’’s first state-wide universal health care law. Community members like Ms. Franzen have reignited the movement for universal, publicly financed health care in the United States, and communities in Maryland, Maine, and Pennsylvania have now picked up the torch, starting their own Healthcare Is a Human Right campaigns, with other states poised to follow. We will be joined at this event by representatives from Healthcare Is a Human Right-Maryland, Healthcare Is a Human Right-Maine, and Healthcare Is a Human Right-Pennsylvania, which collectively form the vanguard of a new human rights movement for universal health care.

We ask you to join us on Human Rights Day in re-committing to the principle that human rights begin at home and honoring Ms. Franzen for her leadership in this historic health care breakthrough.
